Glenn H. Wemple

Glenn H. Wemple slipped quietly from this world on June 4, 2015 with his wife and daughter at his side. Glenn, a member of a pioneer family was settled in Milford in 1863, was born on May 27, 1926 on the family ranch. He was a second son of Claude C. and Henrietta Winchester Wemple.

Glenn spent his childhood playing in the fields and creeks near his family’s home. He began his education in the one-room school in Milford. After graduating from eighth grade, he attended Lassen High School, graduating in 1944. While attending Lassen, he participated in football and played the trombone in the high school band.

Upon graduation, Glenn spent two years in the Army. His experiences as a soldier became the basis of his book, Drafted. Glenn later attended Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, only to be called home as his help was needed on the ranch. Glenn then attended Lassen Community College, playing football for the college team. These experiences became another book, The Evergreen Bowl.

Glenn was passionate about agriculture and education. He spent his life as a faithful steward of the land. Glenn and his brother Don, spent their lives improving their land, crops and cattle herd. Their generation helped to bring agriculture from the horse-drawn era into the technological age.

In 1957 Glenn earned a seat on the Lassen High School/Lassen College Board. He retired from the Lassen Community College Board in 1987. He felt strongly that community colleges should be open to all that wished to attend. Glenn felt colleges should operate to meet student needs in both academic and vocational programs. His goal was to keep costs reasonable for the benefit of students. Glenn served on many state committees, working to improve the quality of education for community college students.

Glenn had a deep love of his family. His sense of humor added fun to all family gatherings. He enjoyed a good discussion or argument, depending on which side of the discussion you were defending. For many years Glenn and Verna hosted the bi-annual Wemple Family Reunion at their ranch, inviting the clan back to their roots in Milford.

Glenn is predeceased by his parents, Claude and Henrietta Wemple. He is also predeceased by his brother Don (Gay) Wemple and his sister Myra (LaRoy) Hunt.

Survivors include his wife of sixty-three years, Verna, his eldest son, Bill (Janelle), Daughter, Glenda (Randy), and Son Fred (Dena). Glenn also leaves behind his Brother, David, and Wife, Donna.

Glenn leaves a legacy in his grandchildren: Kimber Azevedo, Kelly Del Carlo (John), Rob Azevedo, Matt Wemple, and Callie Wemple. This great-grandchildren include: Dyllan Del Carlo, Nathan Del Carlo, Lily Del Carlo, Joel Del Carlo and Paige Azevedo. Glenn leaves a wonderful extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins, all of whom played an important role in his life.

Services were held on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church. Internment followed at the Milford Cemetery.

In keeping with Glenn’s wishes, the family asks that all charitable donations be sent to the Lassen Community College Foundations Endowment Fund in Glenn Wemple’s memory. Donations may be sent to: The Lassen College Foundation, Lassen Community College, P.O. Box 3000, Susanville, Ca. 96130.

Faye Nye Laver

On June 25th 2015, at the age of 89, Faye Nye Laver passed from this life, and into the loving hands of our Heavenly Father. She passed away from complications from surgery for a broken femur. All who knew her will miss her kind heart, determination, and positive outlook on life. She inspired others to never give up when faced with adversity.

A lifetime resident of Lassen County, Faye was born on Mother’s Day, May 9, 1926 on a sheep and cattle ranch in Secret Valley, California to Walter and Clara Nye. She was raised along with her two sisters, Beulah (Nye) Laver, and Ida (Nye) Fox, who preceded her in death, and one brother, Wallace Nye who currently resides in Corning, California.  Faye attended school in Secret Valley and later graduated from Lassen High in 1945. Shortly thereafter, on October 8, 1945 she married rancher Earl “Bud” Laver at what is now the Bradbury Ranch in Standish.  Married 48 years, Bud died on December 18, 1993 after succumbing to a second bout with cancer.

She was an amazing cook and everyone looked forward to a family gathering or potluck that included one or two of Nana’s pies. Every birthday party and many weddings included one of her specialty decorated cakes. It was a known fact that she made the best cinnamon rolls in Lassen County, which were enjoyed by many branding crews. She also enjoyed cooking at 4-H camps at both Blue Lake and Eagle Lake. Her favorite bible verse was John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” She made sure her great grandchildren not only knew the verse by heart, but understood the importance of God’s forgiveness in their lives.

In 1948 the Speake family headed west and moved to the Central Valley of California. Life was tough and she was often teased for her “okie” accent, but she was stubborn and resilient, traits she would carry throughout her life.

She met her future husband Paul at Oakdale High School, when she noticed him in the marching band. He was so handsome and reminded her of a movie star. They fell in love and married after graduation. They started their family in 1952 with the birth of their daughter Rhonda, followed quickly by Shelley, Becky, Beaver, and Scott.

In 1959, the Simpsons moved to Susanville. They joined the Susanville Assembly of God church where they met and made many lifelong friends. Their home was always filled with love and children. Joann and Paul opened their doors to anyone who needed a place to stay or a delicious home cooked meal. During this time, she also worked as a secretary at Lassen High School. Her kindness and compassion impacted many local youth.

Joann and Paul relocated to Chester, CA in 1982 where they built their dream home on the shore of Lake Almanor. Joann loved to ride her bike, walk along the lake, and enjoy the beautiful sunsets and view of Mt. Lassen from her deck. She kept busy as a surveyor’s assistant and fabric clerk at the Chester Emporium.

Joann was a natural mother and homemaker and loved to cook, bake, can, quilt, and sew matching outfits for her three girls. Her cookie jar was never empty and every newborn in the family (and elsewhere) received a homemade blanket at the time of their birth. She loved to craft and shared those talents with both children and adults Her bible study group at the Susanville Church of the Nazarene was responsible for starting the annual all-church craft fair held at the Monsignor Moran Hall.

She also loved sports and supported her sons at every Little League, Babe Ruth, Lassen High School, Menlo College and American River game that she could attend, often driving hundreds of miles on the weekend. Joann was a member of the LHS Booster Club and was seen on the football sidelines as the booster of the week many times. Later in life, she developed an appreciation for professional basketball and a crush on Michael Jordan. She was very competitive and proud of the fact that she won first place in the Chester 4th of July 5K at the age of 69.

Joann was a woman of God and devoted many hours to the churches she belonged to and the organizations associated with them, including Christian Women’s Club, Children’s Church, BGM Crusaders, VBS, Royal Rangers, Women’s Ministries, Mt. Lassen Family Camp, and she also held many offices and taught Sunday School. Her faith helped her to face life’s troubling times with a smile on her face and a song in her heart.

We will celebrate Joann’s wonderful life on Saturday August 8, 2015 at 1:00 in the afternoon at the Susanville Assembly of God. If you would like, wear something pink because it was her favorite color. Graveside and internment will follow at Diamond Crest Cemetery. The family invites you to enjoy two of Joann’s favorite things, dessert and coffee, afterward at the SAG fellowship hall. It was her wish that donations be made to the Mt Lassen Campground, where her family spent many fun summers. Please send checks to Mt. Lassen Campground, PO Box 52, Mineral, CA 96063.

Jim spent a career as a government civilian working on the Hawk missiles system before his retirement in 1989.  He then began working as a sales associate with Home Depot in Reno, which soon became his passion.  If you new Jim then you were probably given or looking for advice on repairing or rebuilding cars, house’s, guns or one of the many other areas that he had gained enormous knowledge in.  Because of his vast knowledge and love of helping people and the many friends he made within his coworkers and customers, Jim continued to work for Home Depot until his illness overtook his body.

Jim will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Services will be held on Saturday, August 29th at the Doyle, CA community center from 10-4pm.  All are welcome to attend this potluck style celebration of life.

NickJonesNicholas Allen Jones

Nicholas “Nick” Allen Jones was born on December 12, 1991 and passed away on September 18, 2015.

In Nick’s short time, he lived his life doing things he loved. He had a passion for anything outdoors. Golfing was a favorite of his, in fact he was all league his senior year at Lassen High School where he graduated in 2010. He also played many other sports in his youth; his family said he was a natural athlete. He also had a passion for motorcycles.

He loved to fish, hunt and just enjoyed being with his family, whether it was camping or doing things around the house. He was one who “tinkered” with things; he had to take them apart to see how they worked before he would use them.

He had more “best” friends than his family knew was possible. Many whose lives he touched are now asking themselves, “What would Nick Jones do?”

In 2013 he graduated at the top of his class from MMI (Motorcycle Mechanics Institute) in Phoenix, Arizona.

At his sister Ashley’s recent wedding, he told her he “loved being in a suit, and that he could be in one everyday.” Nick thought he was meant to do something where he could wear one daily. He had a very special relationship with Ashley’s daughter, his niece, Addison. They were crazy about each other.

Nick believed he was meant to be born many years ago; he was an old soul who didn’t understand how people lived their lives today. In fact his philosophy was, “you only live once, live in debt.”

“Our Nick” is survived by his parents, Ed and Tina (Cordoba) Herrera and Tim Jones of Susanville. His beloved sister, Ashley (Justin) Sperle, his brother Anthony Herrera. Niece Addison Sperle. His grandparents; Berto and Pam Cordoba and David and Christine Westfall, of Susanville.

Aunts and uncles, Keith Cordoba of Susanville, Jeff and Christen Herrera of Lemoore, Ca, and Randy and Tami Bradshaw of Woodbridge, Ca.  Plus many other aunts, uncles and cousins.

To the “Jim’s you know who you are, don’t be sad – Nick is now at peace. Live your lives as you know Nick would want you to.”

Donations can be made to the Lassen High Golf Team, and or the Junior Fishing Derby as those were two of Nick’s passions.

Services will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Saturday 11:00a.m. with graveside service to follow at Diamond Crest Cemetery. Reception to follow at Monsignor Moran Hall.

In Loving Memory for

William Kelly Blue

When tomorrow starts without me,

And I’m not here to hear your voice and see…

If the sun should rise and find your

Eyes filled with tears for me

I wish so much you wouldn’t cry

The way you did today…

While thinking of the many things

We didn’t get to say.

I know how much you love me,

don’t think I didn’t know.

I love you more then you will ever know

I wasn’t good with words…

And each time you think of me,

I know you’ll miss me, too.

When tomorrow starts without me,

Don’t think we’re far apart…

For every time you think of me,

I’m right here in your heart.

Janice Margaret Beck Heid

February 11, 1947 — October 4, 2015

Janice_Heid_Obituary_PhotoJan Heid was a selfless, caring, and thoughtful soul who enriched the lives of all who knew her. A loving mother and caring guardian of animals, she leaves behind a legacy of joy and happiness.

The daughter of Albert Beck and Gertrude Jane Beck, Jan was born in Berkeley, California, and grew up in Castro Valley and Carmichael. She graduated from UC Davis and Golden Gate University law school and worked as an attorney for more than 20 years, specializing in family law. She moved to Susanville in 1996, drawn by the wide open spaces and her love of the outdoors.

She served as deputy county counsel for Lassen County until 2002. After her retirement from law, she worked as executive director for the Lassen Land and Trails Trust (LLTT) until 2008. While there, she established Nature Camp—a week-long outdoor education program for elementary school students and one of her proudest accomplishments at LLTT.

She possessed boundless curiosity and was an avid reader throughout her life, with a deep interest in California and Western history. She pursued a passion and remarkable talent for oil painting in her later years—her favorite work was an award-winning portrait of her beloved canine companion, Ellie ‘the best dog ever.’

She cherished her children and grandchildren and will be profoundly missed by all who loved her. She is survived by her life partner, Sid Bean; her sister, Marsha Lewis; her brother, Alan Beck; and her two sons, Matthew Jacob Heid and John William Heid.

Dorothy Mae Tassi

Dorothy Mae Tassi was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on October 29th 1923, and passed on to Heaven on October 10th 2015.

She was preceded in death by her husband Frank Tassi, and granddaughter Kelly Dawn Berry. She is survived by her very loving son Randy Tassi and daughter-in-law Janice of Susanville, California, and one daughter Christine Reed of Carson City, NV.

Dorothy dearly loved her numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great grandchild.

She worked for many years as a Waitress/Manager of Walker’s Coffee Shop and then later on for Peggy Rose’s clothing store. Dorothy was always working and of service to many in our community, even putting in a few years at Ace hardware.

The consensus of those who knew Dorothy long, considered her to be “A real kick, very entertaining, a great joy, and very informative”, to name a few, and that is naming just a few!

Dorothy lived life on her own terms. She was a take charge, in charge kind of person and most people let her be. She was blessed to have had a great number of beautiful friends whom she loved and enjoyed. Dorothy wanted her obituary to be short by telling me to just say “she lived and she died”. Well she did for almost 92 years and now may she rest in peace.

By her request, there will be no services.
