Jacqueline ( Jackie) Iverson

Jacqueline ( Jackie) Iverson went home to be with Jesus Sunday, June 21, 2020.

Jacqueline was born January 7, 1925 in Oakland, Californian to Treadwell  ( Ted) and Ruth Oman Hubbard.  Fred Hubbard, her brother, was four years older.  Her family lived in San Leandro CA until the Great Depression in 1929.  Her father, along with millions of workers, lost his job and the family moved to Burlingame, California and started over.  Her father was fortunate to find employment and keep a roof over their heads. Jackie remembered her mother often feeding hobos who came asking for food in exchange for work.

Jackie attended elementary and high school in Burlingame.  She acted and sang in many school productions and loved performing.  One of her best friends in school was Richard Morris, who later went on to write the play, the Unsinkable Molly Brown.  She and Richard wrote and performed in many plays in school.

In high school she met her future husband, David Iverson.  When her father relocated to Phoenix for employment, she followed him initially but soon returned to her beloved Burlingame to complete high school.  World War ll loomed, and in early 1943 David was drafted and sent to boot camp in Corvallis, Oregon.  Jackie graduated from high school and then joined David in Corvallis, where they were married.  Soon after, David went to San Diego, and then was deployed to the South Pacific.  Jackie returned to Burlingame where she lived with her in-laws for 2 years.  She worked for Standard Oil and was a poster girl for Goodyear Tires.  She seriously began studying music, with a goal of becoming an opera singer.

David came home in 1946 and they picked up their lives.  They bought their first home in San Mateo, CA.  In 1947 their only child, Kristin Iverson ( Volberg) was welcomed into their lives.  Jackie and David both taught piano lessons in their home.  Jackie continued to pursue her singing career.  Her voice and beauty landed her a job on the Les Malloy Show, a daily TV show out of San Francisco.  She also sang with the show’s band at supermarket openings around the Bay Area.  Although she was singing popular music during this time, her first love was opera.  She began studying with a serious opera maestro.  In 1954 she was first runner-up in Miss U.S. TV contest.

The family moved to Belmont, CA in 1952.  Jackie continued singing around the Bay Area, performing at the Bocce Ball in Palo Alto.  She also wrote poetry, became an accomplished artist, and attended college.  She sang in the Belmont Congregational Church Choir, where David was choir director.

In 1986 Jackie gave a benefit concert for San Mateo County Mental Health.  At 61, her voice was still beautiful, as was she.

In 1992 Jackie moved to Susanville to live closer to her daughter, Kristin and family.  She fell in love with the town.  Jackie volunteered at McKinley School where she read to children every week.  She acted in some local productions and participated in Words and Music.  She was always a performer.  Even in her later years, she never went anywhere without her makeup.

Jackie was a loving follower of Jesus Christ and attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Susanville Episcopal Church and Susanville Community Church.  She was a resident of Eagle Lake Village for the last five years, where she loved art classes.  Her 1986 concert was played for all the residents and visitors, and thoroughly enjoyed.

Jackie was an amazing, talented, feisty, beautiful, loving woman, mother, grandmother and friend.  She was preceded in death by her husband David, father and mother, and brother Fred.  She leaves a huge family; daughter Kristin Volberg ( Keith), grandson Jim Young ( Holly), Steve Young ( Vicki) granddaughter Denise Royal,   great granddaughters Destiny Young, Anna Lee Young, Cory Dawn Young,  Stephenie Young, Faith Young, great grandsons  Skylar Banner and Stephen Young, Nieces Julie Hutchinson of Newport Beach,  Pamela Hubbard of Sydney Australia, nephew Mark Hubbard of Wales UK, and 8 great great grandchildren.

Services for Jackie will be held on Saturday, July 11 at 1:00pm at the Susanville Community Church annex on the corner of Lassen and Cottage Streets. A graveside service will follow at Diamond Crest Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, please make any donations to Judy’s House in Susanville in Jacqueline Iverson’s name.

Louie Irvin Templeton Jr.

Louie Irvin Templeton Jr. was born in Westwood, California to Hazel and Louie Sr., and died suddenly and unexpectedly at his home in Susanville, California on June 27, 2020.

Just after the second world war, along with older sister Shirley Ruth Workman (Toby), (who early on thought her brother worthy of the nickname “Bub”), the Templeton family moved to their home in Susanville. Two more siblings, brothers Spencer Dean and Vernon Howard were later born in Susanville, bringing more action into the household.

Louie Jr. was introduced to various outdoor recreational opportunities of Lassen County by his dad, family and friends and soon took active participation with a lifetime of appreciation and passion, especially hunting deer, and then later, elk. Humor was often part of the adventure, and it must have carried over into the classroom. He also played football and was recognized by his Lassen High classmates as “the wittiest” in his senior year annual. He graduated with the class of 1957.

Louie Jr. was a public servant who did his best to provide a good life to his family, help his fellow man, and honor God and his country. He served four years in the Marine Corps., then returned to Susanville after an honorable discharge. He completed some classes at Lassen College, earned a contractor’s license, and worked in the family business of Templeton’s Electric for about twenty years.

He met the love of his life, wife Georgia Pauline Nield, and they married even though it was the opening day of deer season in 1962. They had one son, Kenneth Alan Templeton and one daughter, Laura Marie Shinn (Richard). Laura and Richard Shinn have one beloved daughter, Madilyn Kenzie Shinn.

Louie Jr. served on the city council and Lassen Municipal Utility District board. After the close of Templeton’s Electric, Louie Jr. worked for the City of Susanville for approximately twenty years before retiring from the position of Public Works Director.

Louie Jr. was preceded in death by his mom Hazel, dad Louie Sr. and big sister Shirley. A celebration of life is planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a cause of your choice.

John R. Pastor (Jack)

“Death and love are the two wings that bear the good man to heaven” (Michelangelo)

A good man, John R. Pastor (Jack) passed away in the loving embrace of family on Sunday, July 5, 2020. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Sally Pastor.

Jack was born on October 14, 1940 in McKeesport, PA to John and Mary Pastor. He grew up in McKeesport with his two brothers, Jimmy and Ralph and his two sisters, Mary Lou and Adele. In 1963, Jack enlisted in the Army where he trained in communications. Jack was stationed in Alaska and also spent part of his service in Korea and Sacramento. It was while stationed in Sacramento that he met Sally Cork; they were married on June 20, 1964. He served his country from 1963 to 1966. Upon receiving an honorable discharge from the military, Jack and Sally moved to Colusa, California where Jack worked for Citizen Communications, and the young couple began their family. His first daughter, Tammy, was born in 1965. His daughter, Kathy, was born in 1967 and was followed by Marleen in 1969. His son Robert joined the family in 1973. As Jack worked his way up the ladder of Citizens, he moved his family to Elk Grove and then, in 1981, the Pastor family moved to Susanville, California. He worked for Citizens until he retired after which Jack perused a multitude of varied interests and opportunities.

Jack enjoyed fishing with his son, his good friend JC Powers, his son-in-laws, and his grandsons. He wrote a book titled The Plight of the American Worker and had it self-published in 1993. Jack was an entrepreneur. Along with his son Robert, he had two commercial buildings added to the Susanville community. He fought alongside his wife, Sally, for the addition of passing lanes on 395, for the abolishment of the open ammunition disposal in Herlong, CA, and for the shutdown of the medical waste incinerator at Lassen College. Jack fiercely and compassionately fought against cancer with the creation of his herbal “Jungle Juice” which he gave to anyone fighting the battle against cancer. Jack was also an inventor. He created a water clock, the Send Tone, a device for telecommunications, and he developed a magnetic motor. Jack’s quick mind was always at work either inventing new things, finding ways to better his community, seeking new business opportunities, or caring for others. Jack would say his most important work was his missionary work. Jack’s faith in God helped him to help others; he gave unconditionally to those in need. Jack’s family would say his most important work was the love, strength, and support he provided his family.  He will be truly missed by all who knew him.

Jack is survived by his brother Jimmy (Debbie) Pastor of Slidell, LA, his brother Ralph (Karen) Pastor of Placerville, CA, his sister Mary Lou Ruffner of Allentown, PA, and his sister Adele (Chuck) Clemmer of Allentown, PA.  He also leaves behind his four children: Bianca Paris (Tammy) of Las Vegas, NV, Kathy Andrea and her husband Larry of El Dorado Hills, CA, Marleen Norvell and her husband Sean of Janesville, CA, and Robert Pastor and his wife Diana Bailey of Janesville, CA. Jack was blessed with six grandchildren: Stephanie Granger and her husband Loren, Amanda Divers and her husband Jesse, Michael Andrea, Corey Norvell and his wife Madison, Steven Norvell and his partner Laurel Loe, and Mitchel Pastor. Jack was also the proud great-grandfather of eleven great-grandchildren: Riley and Logan Granger, Mason and Peyton Divers, Mayson Granadino, Landon, Asher, and Nash Norvell, Maloni Norvell, and Rorry and Evelyn Loe.

Marva Joan Kanouse Hubbard LeDou – July 23, 2020

Marva Joan Kanouse Hubbard LeDou

Marva was born in Vici, OK to parents Josiah (Jay) Snyder Kanouse and Stella Irene Kanouse (yes, they were first cousins J) on October 19, 1938.  She was born with a club foot and endured many surgeries throughout her childhood.  She said the challenges of walking and of being far from family while in the hospital, as well as the death of her father when she was five, gave her the strength and perseverance she would need throughout her life.  Her father, Jay, was the blacksmith in Vici, he created her first leg brace; doctors marveled at the design and how effective it was in helping Marva walk.  Marva was born the sixth of nine children and is survived by siblings Patsy Dotson of Susanville, CA, Lester Bouydston of Woodway, TX, and Arnola Watkins of Darrouzett, TX.

With her family, Marva moved to McKinleyville, CA on the northern CA coast in her early teens.  There she met and married her first husband, James (Jim) H. Hubbard in 1955.  Her four children followed, Vickie Irene, James Othman, Robert Wayne, and Lesley Leon.  After living in many places throughout northern California and Oregon, they moved to Susanville in 1962, then divorced in 1965.  Following her divorce, Marva went to work at Safeway, where she worked for 30+ years in the bakery, the floral dept. and the bread dept.; she also made lifelong friends while there.  She also developed her art of cake decorating during those years, creating many stunning weddings and other celebratory cakes for friends and family, out of her own kitchen.

Marva married W. T. (Thad) LeDou in 1968, enlarging her family with Thad’s four grown children, Patsy, Richard, Frances, Carla.  Thad played rhythm guitar in a local country western band at local venues and Marva joined in as their singer.  They soon gave up the smoky venues and ultimately found their favorite venue, in worshiping their Lord at Janesville Baptist Church (the Log Cabin Church).  Shortly after Thad’s passing in 1995, Marva retired from Safeway and began many years of volunteer work in various roles at her church, in teaching writing to ESL students for a program through the local library, and in working with a group of churches, in more recent years, for a sports-oriented Vacation Bible School every summer for local children.  She had a servant’s heart and these “jobs” gave her both a sense of purpose and great joy.  Her own exceptional writing skills made it a joy to receive a note or letter from her, or to read her stories about her childhood.  Marva loved to laugh, or cackle some would say; the many shared memories of friends and family, always include laughter.  Her faith and her laughter were the antidotes to challenges she faced and conquered.

Marva, 81, passed on Thursday, July 23, 2020 at Lassen Nursing and Rehab Hospital.  She is survived by her children, Vickie Converse (Dave), James Hubbard (Terri), Robert Hubbard (Shawn), and Les Hubbard (Lisa), and 16 grandchildren.  Also surviving are her stepchildren, Patsy Clark, Rick LeDou, Fran Hyatt, and Carla May, and 9 grandchildren.  And many great grandchildren.

A graveside service celebrating her life among us and her eternal life will be held on Tuesday, July 28th at 10:00 AM, as she is laid to rest beside her husband, Thad, in the veteran’s section of Diamond Crest Cemetery.

When Enough Time Passes

by James Hubbard

Time passes too fast, now it’s time,

To lay our mother under the green grass.

Our memories with her are set in stone,

They will last forever from the past.

Mother has entered the ever-lasting,

Where there is no more passing,

No sorrow, no mankind clashing.

Where the future, the present,

And the past blend.

Where there is no first, or last,

And the end of time never passes.

Annita L. (Zerger) Hayes

It is with great sadness that the family of Annita L. (Zerger) Hayes announces her passing.  She passed away peacefully in her Janesville home on Friday, July 31, 2020 after a four year battle with ALS.  She was born in Burbank, California.  She met her husband, M. Dale Hayes in Ukiah California and was married there on July 15, 1960.

She enjoyed sewing, cooking, and canning. While her children were in 4-H she was an instructor with the 4-H group where she taught young girls how to sew and cook.  She taught her children to treat other people as they would want to be treated, that they could become anything they wanted to be, and that life and love is like a roller coaster.

Annita felt a strong connection to the Lassen County California area so her and her husband, Dale, settled down in the Susanville/Janesville area about 30 years ago.  In her retirement years she loved to travel to Fort Bragg or Eagle Lake located in California.

In her retirement years her greatest joys were being actively involved with The Community Church in Susanville, which also included folding the weekly bulletins, and then lunch with a dear friend.  She loved her bible study group, and made some really good friends there.  She also looked forward to greeting people as they came into the church building.  Everyone was welcomed with a smile, and a hug.   Because she had such a gentle soul and a strong faith in her religion, she was an inspiration to many people.  She loved life and greeted every morning with a smile.

She is survived by her husband of sixty years of marriage, M. Dale Hayes, her daughters, Karen Hayes, Mary Jackson (Brett Jackson), and Debby Burnett (Robert Burnett), her sister Evelyn Zerger, and brother John Albright.    She also left behind six grandchildren: Jacob, Brandon, Robert, Cassidy, Angela, and Ryan, as well as five great grandchildren: Mikayala, Michael, Haley, Isabella, and Skylar.  Although she did not get to see her family often, she loved them all dearly.

The family is going to privately celebrate her life.   In lieu of flowers she would have wished that donations be made to a church, ALS foundation, or to a favorite charity in her memory.

She has fulfilled a lifelong dream of meeting Jesus.

Monica Ellen Bendix

Monica Ellen Bendix went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 26, 2020 at St Mary’s Hospital in Reno, Nevada. She was born in North Hollywood, CA on March 18, 1959. Monica moved to Susanville with her husband Chief Warrant Officer (Ret. U.S. Army) Brett Bendix in March 2018 to be close to Brett’s father.

Monica gave up her career in the medical field to become a stay at home mom and home maker working hard as head of the house during her husband’s military deployments.

Monica was a country girl at heart, and an artist. She loved to draw, paint, make jewelry and other decorative items while listening to her favorite country music. She loved to decorate her home for every occasion. Her comfort came from having pictures of family and loved ones throughout the house. Monica loved to post or hang quotes of Love, Family and Friendship which could be seen on most every wall in the house. If words were used to describe her they would be Friends, Family and Love. Monica was also a dog lover. Over the years she bred and showed Chihuahuas and adopted many rescue dogs.

Monica and Brett frequently traveled to visit family and loved ones. Her children and grandchildren were the highlight of her life. She was an avid fishing person and together with Brett and or her son, took many offshore and freshwater fishing trips, most recently to Antelope and Eagle lakes. Adyne Neuhardt “Granny”

“It broke our hearts to lose you
But you didn’t go alone,
For part of us went with you
The day God called you home.”

Adyne Neuhardt, better known as “Granny” passed away at home on August 17, 2020 in Susanville where she lived with her son, Dennis Sutton, and daughter-in-law, Debbie.  Adyne was born in Colusa to Rita and George Lenahan on March 8, 1924.  She grew up in Willows along with her five brothers and two sisters.  Adyne graduated from Willows High School in 1942.  Adyne lived in Chico prior to moving to Susanville.   Adyne moved to Susanville in 1973 with her husband, Larry Neuhardt, and established their business, Industrial Electric, that served the community for over 15 years.

Adyne always had a zeal for life and adventure and was up for any challenge.   In 1963, her husband, Larry, accepted a job on the Mangla Dam Project in Pakistan.  While in Mangla, she stepped out of her comfort zone many times by riding a camel and bribing a mongoose with Hershey bars to keep the snakes out of the house.  She took “girl trips” to various places in the Middle East, including a visit to the Taj Mahal in India.  She also hosted many Bridge and Whist card parties.

Adyne was a loving wife and mother and a nurturer and caregiver to all.  Adyne made herself available to help anyone in any way she could, whether for family, friends, or community members.  She was a very active member of the local VFW.  Not only did she cook many breakfasts and dinners for the organization, she also popped a lot of popcorn for the Best of Broadway productions over the years.  In 2009, Adyne was given the honor of the Lassen County Fair’s Old Timer of the Year Award.

Adyne had a profound and positive impact on the lives of all she touched. Adyne was an amazing cook and shared her talent with family and friends by cooking for them on a regular basis.  If you didn’t find her helping in the community, you would find her in the kitchen.   Adyne worked in various positions throughout her lifetime from nursing to the bookkeeper at Industrial Electric, to working for the Lassen County Promises Program.  No matter what her position in life, Adyne will always be known as Granny.

Adyne was a dedicated mother who taught her children to love God, have a good ethic, be thankful for their blessings and to stand strong in their beliefs.  She shared with each of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren an inner strength that would enable them, as it did her, to meet life’s challenges.  Adyne was an especially wonderful grandmother, great grandmother and great, great grandmother.  Each has their own favorite memories of her.  Adyne always had time to listen, play and cook with them.  One of her favorite things to tell her grandchildren was that she “loves them a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck”.

Adyne was preceded in death by her husband, Larry, and six siblings.  She is survived by her daughter, Connie Kraemer (George), and sons, Dennis Sutton (Debbie) and Carl Neuhardt (Kim), five grandchildren, Melissa Downing (Tom), Sally Rorie (James), Jamie Gilly (John), Jenni Crow (Clint) and Tim Neuhardt, 13 great grandchildren, three great, great grandchildren, and her brother Earl Leonard Lenahan.

Per Adyne’s request no public services will be held.
