In Remembrance of Doc Laraway

Dr. Archie Emerson Laraway, Jr., passed away at the age of 97, into the hands of God and heaven, ending, his “long journey towards home,” on Wednesday, September 24, 2014. Surrounded by family and friends, he graciously thanked each for being a part of his life; humble, caring, and God loving until his last breath.

Dad, Papa, Grandpa, Doc, Archie, Larry, Emerson, was loved by many and will be sorely missed. But we know he is with his Savior and has rejoined those who have gone before him.

Doc is survived by his children: John Laraway, Bud Laraway, Shannon (Mark) Crenshaw, Becky (Allen) Thomson, Cindi Simmons, Georgia (James) Rainer, and Virginia Donovan; also numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, special nieces and nephews, in-laws, and his extensive adopted “family.”

His life partner, loving wife of fifty years, Norma, preceded him to heaven, including daughter, Ruthie, brother Ed Laraway and sister Betty Wilson, many special in-laws, colleagues, and friends.

Born in Chicago, Ill., on February 19, 1917, to Archie Emerson Laraway, Sr., and Etta Smith, Doc was much loved, and the adventure of a lifetime began. His parents traveled the U.S., evangelizing and singing at churches and tent revivals across the States. In 1919, the pandemic flu took his mother’s life, so Doc went to live with an aunt while his father traveled to China as a missionary. Doc was sent across the ocean to join his father when Archie, Sr., remarried, and Doc I remained in a British Boarding school in China while the family grew; Betty and Ed became his little sister and brother.

Returning to the States, Doc was left at different farms and places in the Central Valley of CA. during the Great Depression, where he continued his schooling and developed a strong work ethic. As a young boy of 11, his father left him at Voorhees Boys School in San-Dimas, CA, a place which brought stability, caring, and a foundation in Quaker ethics. Doc graduated from Bonita High School, earned his B.A. degree at Whittier College in 1936, and went on to medical school to become a physician, earning his M.D. as a Pathologist. He learned through the generosity of friends and supporters to work hard, love God, and give back to those in need. He often told us, “Doors opened and I took the opportunities which God gave me.”

In 1944, while completing medical school, Doc met the love of his life, Norma Roskam, who was a student at BIOLA and hostess at Clifton’s Cafeteria in L.A. They fell in love, beginning their 50 yr. journey together. Both were very active at Montecito Church; singing, teaching, and forming life-long bonds with many. Norma was the gracious hostess for special events and meals in their home; Doc brought church youth and medical students for get-togethers, a time to worship, celebrate, and learn together. Doc joined choirs at Montecito, and later, Lake Avenue Congregational Church, sharing his beautiful voice and musical talents.

Caring for, adopting, and having their own children, was an integral part of Doc and Norma’s life. Their first and second born sons, John and Bud, brought joy and adventure to their lives, in addition to the sweet beautiful Ruthie. Virginia and Georgia were taken into the “Laraway fold,” to be nurtured and loved, in addition to the adoption of Becky, Shannon and Cindi. As the family grew, Doc practiced pathology at San Gabriel Valley Hospital, later adding Glendale, Lark Ellen, and other hospitals to his practice. Doc brought professionalism and caring to his “job” as a doctor; many colleagues became life-long friends through their associations in the medical field. Always sharing his growing love for the Lord and deepening spiritual faith, Doc was more than just a dad and friend, he was also a humble, gentle, spiritual man who loved many and shared his love of God on a daily basis.

As time passed, the family shared in adventures at the desert house in Little Rock, the beach house in San Clemente, road trips through the Grand Canyon, Bryce and Zion, in addition to growing a “neighborhood” in San Marino filled with many kids. The Laraway’s was the gathering place, the place for a good meal, fun, and adventures. Dad guided us to church, in our schooling, supported us in choosing our direction in life.

When the opportunity came up to purchase a piece of forested property in Janesville in 1970, Doc and Norma jumped at the chance to plan a future move from So. Pasadena and city life, to country life in Lassen County. After retirement from So. CA. hospitals, he worked part time in Lassen and Plumas counties as a pathologist. While building their dream house in the woods, Doc and Norma also began a close relationship with many families around Janesville. Becoming a registered Tree Farmer and working with LCC’s forestry program, Doc incorporated several projects on his property to improve the forest. He was an integral part of the establishment of Janesville Christian Fellowship, and he and Norma began Janesville Bible Camps in 1980 on their property to “share God’s word and creation” with hundreds of local children.

As families grew and moved, friendships developed, relationships strengthened, Doc and Norma continued to share their home and deep love for the Lord. As time passed, Norma left Doc in 1994 for heaven, and Doc continued to touch people’s lives with his gentle, kind spirit and hard work ethic. Doc and Norma have had a profound effect on many, many lives. No matter who needed a helping hand, Doc was there; cutting firewood, Christmas trees, lending a hand to build a house or church, to preach or teach, preparing for camps, to share a meal and time together. His quirky sense of humor, his fierce independence, his deep love for God, his caring for each of us has touched us all in some special way.

Doc has slipped the bounds of earth and joined his Maker in his “renewed body”, whole and free of pain. What a gift this special man has given each of us. We will remember his smile and quiet spirit. His independence and stubbornness which helped him survive; his strong work ethic and his love for his family, We will remember his love for God, and his wish that we would all read the Bible, open our hearts, and accept the gift of everlasting life. Thank you, Dad, for a life well lived, for the gift of family, for your spirit and heart. We will miss you in many, many ways and for years to come. But, we know you are in the hand of God now. Keep a place set at the table for us.

Join us in celebration of Doc’s life on Saturday, October 4th at 10:00 a.m. at Peanut Butter Camp on Doc’s property, 462-300 Upper Christie, Janesville. For questions, call Becky or Allen Thompson at 253-3684 or 251-3684 or email: larawaythomson1@hotmail.com

Wilhelmina (Minnie) Theobald Loyd

Wilhelmina (Minnie) Theobald Loyd was born July 22, 1918 in Mountain Lake, Minnesota, to George & Julianna Heinitz, Volga German immigrants from Russia. Minnie was the youngest in her family which included siblings George, Alex, Julia and Clara.

Minnie grew up in Lodi, CA, where she attended Lutheran parochial school. Minnie worked hard all of her life in a variety of jobs which included working in a cannery in Stockton, sewing flags during World War II in a factory in San Francisco, and finally as a veterinary assistant for 17 years in Stockton. If she’d been born in a different time, her dream job would have been to be a nurse or a professional golfer. She loved to watch golf on television. Even as her eyesight was fading, she was always able to see the putt drop in the cup.

Minnie met her first love, George Franklin Theobald, through mutual friends when she was 18. They married on June 19, 1937 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Lodi. They waited 15 anxious years for the arrival of their one and only child, Ken. A daughter was added when Ken married Elaine Dold in 1974. Minnie & Frank shared a wonderful life together for 42 years until cancer took Frank from her.

Fortunately, a happy, new role awaited Minnie, grandma. Her first grandchild, Julianna Theobald, was born about a month later and grandson, Nicholas Theobald, followed 2 years after that. She gained two more grandchildren when Julie married Darren Kirack and Nick married Holly Coombe. Minnie also had the joy of living near her great-grandchildren Keegan, Cody and Katelyn Kirack who affectionately called her Great Boo.

Minnie was twice lucky in love. When a former beau, Edgar Loyd, heard of her widowhood, he came courting. They were married on her birthday 1984. Minnie’s family grew to include children Fred (Janet) Loyd and Georgia (Ken) Denio as well as grandkids Christopher Loyd, Eric (Jaime) Denio and Tracie (David) Kerby as well as many great-grandchildren. Minnie & Ed loved to travel; their favorite trips were to Alaska and Hawaii. Soon after Ed’s death in 2004, Minnie moved to be closer to her family in Susanville.

Minnie loved to laugh, dance and sing. She was an avid knitter and crocheter. Her homegrown tomatoes and German dishes, especially Bierock, were legendary.

Shortly after Eagle Lake Village opened, Minnie moved in and made it her home. Scamp, her miniature Schnauzer companion, visited every day.

Minnie’s long journey has ended and she is now living peacefully with her Lord.

Zelma Martha Power Sherman

Zelma Sherman passed away December 31, 2014 at the age of 100 surrounded by family and friends. She was born February 22, 1914 in Winkelman, Arizona.

Zelma spent her early years in Orange, California. She attended UC Berkeley where she majored in physical and general education. She returned to Orange to teach school. During World War II, she met and married Marvin Sherman “Sherm” and moved to HoneyLakeValley where they ranched east of Janesville. Being raised in the city of Orange, Zelma had to learn new skills working a cattle ranch. To the great surprise of Sherm’s family, she truly enjoyed the ranching lifestyle and one of her favorite stories is how she would always land on her feed when bucked off a horse. Her husband was amazed that she never injured herself landing that way.

Zelma returned to teaching and taught 7th and 8th grade in a one room school house in Standish, Ca. She also taught physical education and was a strong supporter of any exercise. She was an avid golfer and traveled all over the country golfing. She participated in numerous golfing tournaments including the Bing Crosby National Tournament. She taught “Sherm” to golf when they sold the ranch and retired.

Zelma and Sherm never had children of their own, but over the years they provided a home for children to attend high school, and children of Zelma’s friends and family would come, stay and work the ranch during summer months. These children, now grown, with their own families always considered themselves a part of the Sherman family and remained very close to Zelma after Sherm’s death in 1974.

Zelma is survived by her niece Stacy Reno who currently lives in Orange, Ca., Nephew Tyler Krull who currently lives in Placentia, Ca., and her foster daughter, Ethel Wilson who currently lives in Litchfield, Ca., and her many golfing companions.

A Celebration  of Life will be held at Eagle Lake Village at 2001 Paul Bunyan Road, Susanville, CA., on January 24, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the “Friends of the Library” in Susanville, Ca., or to the “Diamond Mountain Women’s Golf Club” at Diamond Mountain Golf Course in Susanville, Ca.

Dreama Jo Crump – January 14, 2015

Dreama Jo Crump

February 16th 1962, an angel descended from heaven to be born on Earth. She was given the name of Dreama Jo Bryant. As a child, she travelled many places with her family and she learned many things that she brought with her as an adult.

In March of 1992, she met the man Brian Crump while working as manager for a small café in Weiser Idaho. A year later on April 10th 1993, they became man and wife and embarked upon a series of different adventures throughout their lives together.

Dreama spoke very fondly of her life in Alaska and reveled about the time she rode her snow machine at 60 miles an hour while doing a 180 degree turn. There were many friends that came in and out of her life and every one of them were given a wonderful gift of her time, company, and friendship. During 9/11, Dreama was employed as a telephone operator for the Director of Information Management in Baumholder, Germany. She connected several calls to and from the Pentagon and the White House.

Beginning life with the problem of weight, Dreama underwent Gastric Bypass surgery from the originator of the procedure in Germany. From 1993 to 2015, she lost over 200 pounds and told everyone who asked that she would have done it again without regrets.

In 2003, Dreama lost her mother Bonnie Jean Bryant and decided to stay with her Father James Bryant while he grieved for his loss. During this time, her husband was deployed to Iraq in support of the war. After returning, they moved to Upstate New York and quickly became the support to coworkers at The Red Lobster and as Manager at Friendly’s.

Dreama loved the food service industry and her dream was to open a restaurant and serve the community. On August of 2014, Dreama and her husband opened D & B Country Café in Susanville California. They were a quick hit with many in the community and many of Dreama’s recipes were favorites among several customers.

Dreama love looking up recipes and coming up with new ideas for everyone to try. Dreama also loved to paint and many of the paintings hanging on the walls of their home are those that she did herself. Mount Rainier was always Dreama’s Mountain and she vowed to return there to Washington.

Dreama had many loves in her life and perhaps some of the greatest were her children and grandchildren. Her daughter Mindy had 5 girls. At one point, her daughter swore that she would have all boys, yet Dreama told her she would have all girls and they would be just like her. Dreama was right of course. The girl’s names are Shaelynn, Destiney, Nautica, Ayrika, and the youngest is Luciana, Of course there is another one due this year and this time maybe it will be a boy.

Dreama’s son Eric took after his mother in many ways including the work ethic and desire to be a leader which he achieved as Kitchen Manager at the local casino. Eric and his wife Jamie have 3 boys named Christopher, Anthony, and Brayden. She loved every single grandchild with all of her heart.

Soon after the restaurant opened, Dreama began to feel ill and too weak to work down at the restaurant. This didn’t stop her from making food at home and sending it down. Thus directing from 12 miles away. In October of 2014, Dreama went in for an ultrasound on her legs and this resulted in a whirlwind of issues causing her to spend over 2 months in hospitals and skilled nursing facilities. Brian never left her side the whole time she was in the hospital. A week before Christmas, Dreama was released from Lassen Skilled Nursing to go home.

Dreama spent Christmas and New Years with family at home while stubbornly ensuring that she cook the meals. With help, Christmas was delicious and filled with love and happiness. As the New Year began, Dreama talked about opening up a new restaurant after they moved to Washington. On January 14th, Dreama felt weak and sick. At the end of the Day, God had decided that the angel He sent down to Earth 52 years ago was then needed more in Heaven than on Earth. This world has been richly blessed by her presence, love, laughter, and her smiles. Those who knew her will attest to this and those who did not missed the chance to see an angel walking this very Earth.

Dreama achieved many things in her life and she will be greatly missed. Dreama was preceded in death by her Mother Bonnie Bryant. She leaves behind a wonderful family that will forever miss her. Her husband Brian Crump, Children Mindy Gonzales and Eric Gonzales, Grandchildren Shaelynn Smith, Destiney Smith, Natuica Smith, Ayrika Smith, and Luciana Corletto. On her son’s side, Christopher Cordova, Anthony Gonzales, and Brayden Gonzales.

She also leaves behind her father James Bryant, Daughter in law Jaimie Gonzales, and soon to be son in law Angel Corletto and his son Damian Corletto. Along with a multitude of family, she is and will always be loved by many friends throughout the world.

This world was blessed with a wonderful gift from God and now returns to His presence and becoming an angel once again. May the Lord take you under His arms and welcome you home to eternal joy and happiness. We all love you Dreama Crump. We will all see you again in Heaven as we will be reunited again as a family.

Sweetheart, as your husband, my heart yearns for you and to be with you. I know that you are safe and well in Heaven and I can’t wait to join you again. You are my princess, my love, my soulmate, my wife, and my very best friend. Rest in Peace my darling until we are together again. I Love You With All My Heart, Soul, and Body.

HELLO MY PRINCESS!!
